Business lady

Cybercrime by the numbers...

42% of cyber crime affects small business

Only 14% of these SMBs were prepared to face an attack

60% of SMEs that suffer a cyber attack go out of business within six months.

  • Is my business a target?
Yes. No one is immune. According to recent research, it is estimated that cybercriminals can reliably penetrate 93 percent of company networks. Artificial intelligence is likely is likely to make this more prevalent, in the way that automation already has done. While 42% of cyber-attacks are aimed at small businesses, only 14% are considered prepared, aware, and capable of defending their networks and data. (Accenture’s Cost of Cybercrime Study). Additionally, as pointed out in Cybersecurity Magazine: 83% of small and medium-sized businesses are not prepared to recover from the financial damages of a cyber-attack. Around 60% of small companies go out of business within six months of a cyber breach. 91% of small businesses haven’t purchased cyber liability insurance, despite awareness of risk and the likelihood that they would be unable to recover from an attack.
  • Is getting a CyberStart, good enough?
When it comes to managing cyber risk, it's important to think like a cyber criminal. Our services put preventative measures in place based on their offensive methods, to make you less vulnerable to attack. Whether that's good enough depends on what type of business you are, how you operate and who you serve. This forms part of our initial discovery. If required, we can go further with added layers of testing, advisory services, protection, monitoring and response. We're constantly searching and developing new solutions to deal with the ever-changing face of cyber threat. When you select The Cyber Guy as your trusted companion for security, this is baked in to our approach. We're on hand for guidance and advice whenever you need it.
  • I know nothing about IT or Security?
Having little or no knowledge of cyber is not an issue. This is a common problem, and one of the reasons we established the CyberStart service. In some cases we run tools to establish the facts about your security status. In any respect, we're here to educate and make things easy for you and will be your guide.
  • I already have an IT service company or in-house IT team?
The data you hold, your users and how they access systems are your responsibility, whether you use an IT company, cloud services or manage IT yourselves. Furthermore, if you outsource IT and use cloud services, it is incumbent on you to check whether your IT provider has all the right controls and technology in place to keep you secure. To help them, IT support and in-house IT departments utilise specialist companies to improve the security posture of the businesses they serve all the time. We colloborate to achieve the best outcomes possible for your business within budget.
  • What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-owned scheme that was developed to help organisations of all sizes defend against the most common cyber threats. It provides reassurance to organisations and their customers that systems are more resilient to basic cyber-attacks. If you follow the advice it should protect you against around 80% of attacks.
  • Is Cyber Essentials enough on its own?
It's a great first step, and for some very small and simple organisations it may be OK to simply cover the basics. However, even for small businesses, The Cyber Guy recommends going a step beyond. It is these extra steps, coupled with our ongoing support at an affordable price that really marks out our CyberStart service over simple set-and-forget approaches to getting the Cyber Essentials Certification alone. We provide monitoring, training and awareness, ongoing checks and up-to-date advice and guidance to help ensure your security remains robust over time. For those in need, we can also offer testing, tighter technical controls, policy writing and a suite of security managed services (see CyberStart Add-ons).
  • What if I already have Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is an annually renewed certification. We can take over your existing certification at renewal and apply our additional ongoing checks and measures to monitor your business and make your security more robust. Moving beyond Cyber Essentials may mean going for Cyber Essentials Plus or and a raft of extensive managed security services from security operations, pen testing, managed detect and response and incident response. The Cyber Guy has services to cover all these and more.
  • How does this protect me against ransomware?
Cyber Criminals need access to your systems and data to detonate ransomware and lock you out. Having defences against common routes of unauthorised access (known as attack vectors), may be done through settings, security software, be based on training and good practice written into policy which can be monitored and enforced. Furthermore, as attack methods change, we're always looking at new ways to help our clients. As your trusted companion for security, this ongoing relationship is one of our key differences compared to set and forget approaches to Cyber Essentials alone.
  • How do I know I'm in safe hands?
Our consultants are security experts, with years of experience honed from working with companies of all sizes, the NHS, police and central government. We have a raft of respected security qualifications including CISSP, the globally accepted gold-standard in cyber security certifications.
  • After you've worked your magic, what other benefits do I get?
A Cyber Essentials certification shows your customers and suppliers you are serious about your and their security. It may help you win business and if you are considering selling your services to any public sector bodies they will expect it. There's piece of mind. Effective cyber security is something you may have put off for a while, but is now in place. You will always have The Cyber Guy as a sounding board and trusted companion if something concerns you. And, if you take the monitoring service, you will also receive £100k of free Cyber Insurance.
